Basic Smoothie Recipe

Adding a recipe for a smoothie does seem slightly ridiculous to me, as I’ve always chucked in what I consider good for me, blitzed and drank.

I used to do a long commute and a smoothie was the perfect thing to accompany the many audio books I listened to. I always felt I arrived at work with a spring in my step, mentally and physically.

I had a mixture of broccoli, kale, spinach, banana, apple, blueberries, strawberry, mango, chia seeds, flax seeds, green powders, spirulina, hemp seeds, raw cacao, and water, always water. I always mix my smoothies with water because I see them as I am not a fan of milks or yogurts in smoothies. It’s too cloying for me. But please, do as you like.

The more I could pack into my smoothie, the better. So follow that principle yourself.

The general rule of thumb is that a sweet fruit like blueberry, or pineapple is strong enough to mask the flavour of any veg you are not keen on. But remember that we are here for health reasons.

You can mix your smoothies with apple juice, of course, but be wary of the unnecessary sugar. Apple juice equals sugar, and you will notice many shop bought smoothies contain a lot of apple juice - sometimes 70% of your smoothie is apple juice! So they’re not actually that good for you, they just look it, and of course, like most things you buy, make you feel better.

Invest in some good powders, spirulina, green boost, maca, raw cacao, add in one at a time or all together, I urge you to not be afraid and try. The better you know your tastebuds, and the routine of putting together a smoothie, the more likely you are to stick at it.

Choose, blend, enjoy!
